Book – Penelopiad – The Myth Of Penelope and Odysseus. The Penelopiad: The Myth of Penelope and Odysseus AND The Song of Achilles. Posted on November 23, 2012 by Claire (BWB). Recommend: To those that like interpretations of myth, stories and literature and just plain ole' love some sarcasm and Margaret Atwood. The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood is a modern-day, rather irreverent, retelling of the myth of Penelope, Odysseus's very faithful wife, and her maids. For these choices, and my interest in all things classically Greek, we have to thank a certain nun named Sister Mary Faith Dargan, OP. A Bit of a Ramble The Penelopiad is the first of the Canongate Myths, a series of myths, fables, and folktales rewritten with a spin by contemporary authors. The story of Penelope – as told by herself. The Penelopiad is part of the first set of books in the Canongate Myth Series where contemporary authors rewrite ancient myths (other authors who wrote as part of this series include A.S. Byatt, Chinua Achebe, and Donna Tartt along Other characters make their appearance as Penelope strolls around the afterlife – including Helen of Troy (Penelope's beautiful and spoiled cousin), Eurycleia (the nanny when Odysseus was a boy), and one of the murdered suitors. Challenge: Feminist Reading Challenge Blurb: In Homer's account in The Odyssey, Penelope–wife of Odysseus and cousin of the beautiful Helen of Troy–is portrayed as the quintessential faithful wife, her story a salutary lesson through the ages. While the story is touted as a retelling of The Odyssey from Penelope's point of view, I find it to be so After all, The Odyssey follows Odysseus who is nowhere near Penelope (geographically speaking), so The Penelopiad adds to the story rather than retells it. She also debunks some of the myth around Odysseus but giving most things a very ordinary feel.
